COPEMAN IS TOP VETERAN
Matt Copeman is Cromer Squash Club's new veterans' champion.
In the final on Friday evening the No.1 seed, who won the Over 35 championship in 2012 and still plays at No.1 for the club's first team in Division Three of the Norfolk SRA leagues, defeated the recently crowned reigning Over 35 champion and four times former club champion John Baker 3-1 in a well contested and hugely entertaining final which was enjoyed by another large crowd at the Norwich Road courts.
Copeman won the opening game of the final but Baker, the No.2 seed, still hits the ball as cleanly as anybody at the club and he drew level as he convincingly took the second game. The key game was the third one which was very tight and closely contested but it was the No. 1 seed who took it to open up a 2-1 lead and with Baker, visibly tiring in the fourth, Copeman dominated the game to win the match 3-1 and take the veterans crown for the first time.
Both players had won their semi-finals in straight games with Copeman defeating Gary Spruce, who was the beaten finalist in the Over 35 tournament, and Baker beating Martin Braybrook.
Afterwards Copeman said: "It is always nice to win a tournament and get your name on the honours board. I am really grateful to Gary Spruce for agreeing to re-arrange the time of our semi-final and I felt really bad when I beat him 3-0. I knew John would push me hard in the final and the third game proved to be decisive."
